Frequently Asked Questions

What style therapy do you practice?

Hopefully, I will practice the style that works best for you.  My experience and training give me a wide range of tools, and together we can choose the interventions, strategies, behaviors, and conversations that work best for how you think, feel, and act.

My theoretical approach is largely based in trauma therapy and attachment theory.  I am trained in clinical hypnosis.  Mostly, I believe in using the power of a good relationship to bring out the resources you already have, so that you are putting your best self into your life and your relationships.

I am close to wanting a divorce.  Can counseling still help?

Many people think of divorce when relational problems feel unsolvable.  If you and your partner would rather stay together, but just cannot see a way to get along, counseling can quickly open up possibilities.

How much does counseling with you cost, and do you take insurance?

My fee is $90.00 per 50 minute session for individual therapy, and $110 per full 60 minute hour for marital therapy.  Group therapy is $40 for the 90 minute groups, and $35 for the hourlong group.
I do not have a sliding scale, but clients, once the fires are put out, can use homework to help reduce frequency of sessions if they chose.
I do take some insurances, but not all.  If you want to see if I accept your insurance, please call me at 802-658-9257, or email to scott@vermontcounselor.com, with insurance information, and we can discuss it.

My partner is physically abusive, and/or actively addicted.  Can you still help?

Probably not.  Therapy requires some degree of safety, and some ability to tolerate difficult emotions.  For most, getting help with the violence and addiction should come before couples counseling.  You may want to contact Women helping Battered Women (1-800 abuse95), Alcoholics_Anonymous or you local county crisis service.

When could we start?

Call or e-mail me today, and I will schedule you a soon as possible.  I start at 8AM, work lunch hours, and have a very few evening appointments.
